SCWLA President Carolyn Matthews Shares Some SCWLA News From 2012
Dear SCWLA Members,
I hope you each had a happy holiday with your families and friends. SCWLA has been very busy around the state.
Here's just a sampling:
USC Women in Law Happy Hour:
On November 14, 2012, Cindy Ouzts and I attended a gathering at The Liberty Tap Room here in Columbia, sponsored by the USC Women in Law. USC WIL President Emily Brown and the other members from USC were so gracious to invite SCWLA members in Columbia!
CSOL Women in Law SCWLA Reception
On November 19, 2012, I traveled to Charleston for SCWLA's Reception Bevs and Bites, honoring the Women in Law at the Charleston School of Law. CSOL Women in Law President Cassie Hutchens, along with approximately 40 students and members of the Charleston County Bar attended the reception, which was held at Nexsen Pruet's office on King Street. We were happy to see Judge Stephanie McDonald and Judge Kristi Lea Harrington at that event. Several male lawyers and law students also attended. Many thanks to SCWLA Board member Molly Cherry for her planning skills and making the evening so festive!
Midlands November Luncheon
On November 16, 2012, the Midlands SCWLA region had its monthly luncheon at the renovated Palmetto Club in Columbia. SCWLA Board Member Susan Stewart arranged for her husband, David Stewart, along with Sonya Motes from Merrill Lynch and Eric Evans of BlackRock's Private Investors' Group, to speak to us regarding, A Financial Markets Overview, Post-Election. Each speaker provided us with important information regarding financial planning and asset management. Karen Huelson, the Midlands representative, continues to present Novel and entertaining programs.
Post-Conference Analysis Meeting
On November 30, 2012, I met with 2012 SCWLA Convention Abigail Walsh and Von Snelgrove from the SC Bar to discuss the Conference, and create a template for future conferences. I will be sending all Board members a report from that meeting soon.
SCWLA U. S. Supreme Court Admission Trip
On December 10, 2012, 24 SCWLA members gathered at the U. S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. to be sworn in as members of the U. S. Supreme Court Bar. SCWLA Member and first Bissell Award recipient Chief Justice Jean Toal made the formal motion for admission.
SCWLA Board member Amie Clifford arranged hotel accommodations, a hospitality room, a reception, a tour of the U. S. Capitol, and a Dinner Sunday evening for SCWLA members and their guests. Amie invested many hours into making this trip a memorable event for all of us.
I was happy to accompany the group, and that my daughter, Austin Bruner, was one of the new admittees.
Midlands Christmas Luncheon
The Midlands Christmas Luncheon was held at noon on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 at The Palmetto Club in Columbia. Karen Huelson secured lovely music from the Marvelous Wonderettes, a quartet which includes Shannon Willis Scruggs, Executive Director of the S. C. Bar Foundation. Town Theater's Executive Director, Sandra Willis, will join us. We donated holiday items to Sistercare at that luncheon.
There are many opportunities within the S. C. Women Lawyers Association. We appreciate each one of you and want to find more ways to serve and interact with you in 2013! Happy Holidays to everyone!
