Thank goodness for February
Despite my best intentions, January is a month of resolutions, calendars, and closing out the past year. February is when the new year begins in earnest. SCWLA has a great year planned – I hope you’ll join me, the Regional Representatives and Board of Directors in making this year our best yet.
Our mission is to enhance the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers in the state of South Carolina. As a statewide bar organization, we are committed to promoting the advancement of women in the profession and to providing opportunities to bring members together wherever they reside and work in South Carolina. We fulfill this mission - and have a great time - by offering both statewide and local programs and social events. Our first statewide program this year is the 2015 Award Reception to be held on March 17 at the State Museum in Columbia from 6-8 pm, followed by our annual CLE on March 18 at the SC Bar Conference Center from 8:30am–1:30 pm. Both of these events were rescheduled due to the flooding in Columbia in the fall. This is our first reception recognizing the winners of all honors annually awarded by SCWLA and the SCWLA Foundation. This year we will be honoring Alice Paylor, the winner of the Jean Galloway Bissell award; Elaine Fowler, the winner of the Jean Hoeffer Toal award; Sarah Leverette, the winner of the SCWLA Foundation’s Martha Dicus Award; and the winners of the Foundation's two law student scholarships. The Award Reception is complimentary for all SCWLA members and I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Columbia this year.
The CLE on March 18 will serve as our only statewide conference this year. We will offer other programs in the fall, including the 2016 Award Reception and a professional development seminar, but we will not be holding a CLE in October, 2016. So please plan to join us on Friday, March 18 for Taking Care of Business. We have a great speaker lineup, including a past-conference favorite, Susan Sneider, the author of the ABA’s A Lawyer’s Guide to Networking, speaking on emotional intelligence in business. The half day CLE will end in time for folks traveling to Columbia for the Award Reception and CLE to make it home for the weekend.
We have other initiatives and programs starting up in each region of the state and in our active committees. SCWLA can accomplish as much as its volunteers are willing to give. If you haven’t been a member of a SCWLA committee in the past or haven’t been active in your region, please let this be your invitation to become more involved in your women’s bar association. For a list and description of our current committees see here. Each region is recruiting members to its planning committee as well and the contact information for each Regional Representative is on our webpage here. Please volunteer – not only will you get more out of SCWLA, the first ten volunteers (5 committee volunteers and 5 regional volunteers) will each receive a copy of the new edition of Susan Sneider’s book A Lawyer’s Guide to Networking. We have a great year planned and I look forward to telling you more about it next month. It’s February – let’s get started!
