04.04.17 Equal Pay Day
Today is Equal Pay Day. Equal Pay Day was originated by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 as a public awareness event to illustrate the gap between men's and women's wages. Because the latest wage figures are not generally available until the end of the year, the NCPE decided years ago to select a Tuesday in April as Equal Pay Day. Notably, a Tuesday was selected to represent how far into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week. Despite the federal Equal Pay Act of 1963 and other federal and state workplace protections for women, experts warn that women and men will not reach pay parity until 2059! SC does not currently have an equal wage law. SCWLA’s newly formed Public Service Committee is monitoring proposed SC legislation on equal pay, and we encourage each of you to do so, too. In the meantime, reach out to our legislators about introducing and supporting legislation in favor of equal pay.
Women deserve equal pay for equal work, as well as equal opportunities for advancement in the workplace.
