The Military Subcommittee of SCWLA is excited to offer a One-Hour CLE for the May 5 luncheon with a variety of topics in addition to providing take-home examples for use in your practice. The topics of the CLE offered during the luncheon include:  The Federal Government’s right to recover under the Federal Medical Care Recovery Act and the implications in personal injury practice, family law, deposing a government official, requesting medical records from government medical treatment facilities, and the Military Justice system.

Our guest speakers for the luncheon include:


Courtney Fleck- Ms. Fleck is the Claims Attorney at Fort Jackson. Courtney attended the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law and is licensed in Kentucky and South Carolina. She handles all tort claims filed against the Department of the Army within the state of South Carolina. Ms. Fleck will discuss the applicable statutes and procedures for deposing government officials, specifically DoD medical providers, and the implications of The Privacy Act in requesting medical records from government medical treatment facilities.

Abigail Ferrick- Ms. Ferrick has worked at Fort Jackson in Affirmative Claims for over 20 years. Ms. Ferrick makes an average of 800 assertions on behalf of the United States each year against third party tortfeasors to recover the reasonable value of medical care and treatment rendered by the United States to military personnel and their family members. Ms. Ferrick will discuss the differences between the United States’ claim and typical liens.

CPT Tyler Fleck- CPT Fleck is a trial counsel (prosecutor) in Military Justice at Fort Jackson. CPT Fleck has served in the Army as a Judge Advocate for three years. Tyler attended the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law and is licensed to practice in Kentucky. CPT Fleck will discuss the Military Justice system and specifically address some of the differences from the civilian criminal justice system to include military specific crimes, family law issues in the military, and jurisdiction.

RSVP to [email protected] by noon on Wednesday, May 4!  Please note that cancellations made after that time are subject to invoicing per the policy of the Palmetto Club.  If you cannot attend and are unable to timely cancel, you may offer your reservation to a guest.  Lunch is $15 for members and military employees, and $20 for nonmembers.  Checks should be made payable to SCWLA.  The CLE is included for SCWLA members as a membership benefit with the purchase of lunch.

Parking:  Parking is available at no charge in the portion of the surface lot directly behind the Palmetto Club building (the entrance to the lot is on Lady Street; the other half of the lot directly behind First Citizens Bank is for bank customers only), as well as in some places marked "Reserved for the Palmetto Club" in the underground garage attached to that lot.  Valet parking is available at a stand in front of the Palmetto Club on Sumter Street at the flat rate of $4 for this event.
