"Pathway to Judgeship in South Carolina"
(Course No. 164977)

Please join us at the June Midlands Luncheon for a one-hour CLE about the Judicial Merit Selection Commission and the process of becoming a judge in South Carolina, complete with helpful handouts. Following the half-hour presentation by Elizabeth Brogdon, we will have a moderated panel discussion with four South Carolina judges (see bios below).

Elizabeth Herlong Brogdon, Chief Counsel to the Judicial Merit Selection Commission.  Following graduation from the USC School of Law, Elizabeth clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  She then practiced general defense litigation at Nexsen Pruet for several years, until she began to focus her practice on appellate work at the firm.  In 2000, Elizabeth joined Nelson Mullins in an Of Counsel position, where she primarily practiced in the area of appellate litigation.  Elizabeth became Chief Counsel to the JMSC in March of 2015.

Panelists:

Hon. Kaye G. Hearn was elected to the South Carolina Supreme Court in May 2009, and is only the second woman member in the Court’s history.  She is a graduate of Bethany College and the USC School of Law and also holds an LLM degree from UVA.   Following law school, she clerked for South Carolina Supreme Court Justice Julius B. Ness.  She has been a judge in this state for approximately 30 years, serving as a member of the S.C. Court of Appeals for 15 years (to include 10 years as Chief Judge).  Prior to that, she served as a Family Court Judge from 1986 to 1995.

Hon. DeAndrea Gist Benjamin took the bench as a Circuit Court Judge in 2011 in one of the busiest counties in the state.  She is a graduate of Winthrop University and the USC School of Law.  She clerked for the Honorable L. Casey Manning following law school, and then served as a Prosecutor in the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office.  In 2001 she joined her father’s law firm in private practice.  She has also served as a Municipal Court Judge from 2004 through April 2011.

Hon. Deborah Brooks Durden has served as a South Carolina Administrative Law Court Judge since February 2009.  She is a graduate of Columbia College and the USC School of Law.  Following law school, she clerked for the Honorable Karen Hunt of the Alaska Superior Court from 1991 to 1992.  After a few years in private practice, she served as Assistant Chief Counsel at the Department of Transportation (1998-2009).

Hon. Michelle M. Hurley has been a Family Court Judge for the Fifth Judicial Circuit in South Carolina since 2013.  She is a graduate of Howard University and the USC School of Law.  Following law school, she clerked for the Honorable Alison Renee Lee, Circuit Court Judge.  She has also served as an associate Municipal Court Judge for the City of Columbia.  Interestingly, prior to her law career, she served as a funeral director and embalmer for her father’s funeral business.
