How the Midlands Can "Grow by Choice, Not Chance"

Please join us on Thursday, May 1, when Amy Clayton, a commercial real estate attorney at Nexsen Pruet, explains the workings of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the ULI South Carolina, as well as the results of a "Reality Check" program that was conducted recently in Columbia.  ULI, a nonprofit research and education program based in Washington, D.C., has over 34,000 members worldwide and was founded 75 years ago with the mission to provide leadership in promoting responsible land use and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide.

ULI is a multidisciplinary real estate forum that brings together people in every profession and sector of real estate development and land use, from all over the world, to share their knowledge in an open forum and give back to their communities.

"Reality Check" is a one-day exercise developed by ULI that engages regional leaders in a dialogue about how their region should grow and compete in the global marketplace.  This planning technique analyzes economic, demographic, and geographic data and trends, with the goal of building a consensus about where the growth of housing and jobs should be located across a region.  ULI SC has hosted "Reality Checks" across the state, including one in Columbia last October (see ULI SC's website at http://southcarolina.uli.org and the ULI website at http://uli.org).  Amy is a member of the Midlands Reality Check Steering Committee and is Co-Chair of its Implementation Committee.

By 2040, the Midlands population is expected to grow by 450,000 new residents.  On October 22 and 24, 2013, over 400 participants from around the region came together for a Game Day and Results Summit to create a vision for how we can "Grow by Choice, Not by Chance."  Since that date, the Midlands Reality Check Implementation Committee -- in partnership with ULI SC and EngenuitySC -- has been working on a plan to turn that vision into a reality and bring the region together in an unprecedented way.  Amy will share that plan with our members and hopes that you'll join the effort to make the Midlands the best place to live, work, play, and visit!
