Our Presenters

Katherine Wells, prior to becoming an attorney and armed with a BA in history from Furman University, worked at the SC Archives, taught high school mathematics, and was the Director of Personnel and Purchasing for Georgetown County.  She moved to Columbia, S.C. in 1988 and in 1991 received her JD degree from the USC School of Law.  More importantly, she passed the South Carolina and Georgia bars, and began practicing law with a small litigation defense firm in Savannah, GA. When she returned to Columbia in 1993, she was fortunate to be hired as a staff attorney with the S.C. Supreme Court for two years.  She then worked with a small firm in Columbia that specialized in bankruptcy litigation, and was a litigator in health, environmental, and bankruptcy cases with the SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control.  She joined the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2003, where she concentrated on alcohol and gambling laws, probate and trust laws, and business related legislation, until her retirement from the Senate in February 2018.

Johanna C. Valenzuela, after graduating from USC but prior to becoming an attorney, served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Fayetteville, North Carolina. After serving in the Air Force for a little over three years, she attended USC School of Law and received her law degree. After graduation, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable G. Ross Anderson, Jr., in the South Carolina District Court in Anderson, South Carolina, and then worked as an assistant solicitor in the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. After prosecuting in York County, she and her family moved back to the Midlands, and she worked as an assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Section of the South Carolina Attorney General’s office before running the Post-Conviction Relief section as a senior assistant deputy attorney general. She joined the staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017, where she now concentrates on alcohol and gambling laws. Johanna is an active member of SCWLA, recently serving as the co-chair for SCWLA’s 25th Anniversary Conference, and she is currently serving as the co-chair for the SC Bar’s Diversity Committee. Most of all, she enjoys spending time with her children, husband, and dog, but she also enjoys hiking, reading, and doing yoga.
