"Custody Venue Across Jurisdictions:  Domestic and International Issues"

This CLE will consist of a discussion of the issues surrounding the proper venue in custody cases that cross domestic and international boundaries.  Among the points included will be an analysis of the intersection of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, the International Child Abduction Remedies Act (22 U.S.C. §§ 9001–11), and the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (S.C. Code Ann. §§ 65-15-300 through -394).

RSVP by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5.  Cancellations made after that time are subject to invoicing per the policy of the Palmetto Club.  You may cancel by using the same link above.  If you cannot attend and are unable to timely cancel, you may offer your reservation to a guest.  Lunch is $15 for SCWLA members and military employees, and $20 for nonmembers.  Payment should be by check made payable to SCWLA.  CLE credit is being provided as a membership benefit to current SCWLA members.

Bio of Presenter Matt Abee

Matt Abee is an associate with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Columbia office. Originally from Murrells Inlet, Matt is a graduate of Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law. He currently practices with Nelson Mullins’ tax lien resolution and litigation group, and also works in the areas of appellate, consumer financial services litigation, and employment litigation. Matt’s pro bono practice involves extensive litigation of international child abduction cases under the Hague Convention. Matt has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the South Carolina Supreme Court, and the South Carolina Court of Appeals. He has also tried cases in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina, the Middle District of North Carolina, and the Eastern District of North Carolina. Matt is married to Kinli Bare Abee, a prosecutor of human trafficking and crimes against children with the South Carolina Attorney General’s office—they have a chocolate lab named Larry.
