07.26.19 Low Country Expungement Training CLE

Next Friday, July 26, 2019, SCWLA and the 9th Circuit Public Defenders Office are joining up with Gale DuBose of the SC Center for Fathers and Families and Bridget Brown of the SC Appleseed Legal Justice Center to hold an Expungement Clinic in Charleston.

There are two major parts of this effort.  First, we will have training for volunteers on expungement law.  CLE credit will be given. In exchange for the free CLE we are asking each attendee to participate in a clinic in your region. This can be by one-on-one review of records for participants or helping with the clinic with such tasks as printing SLED reports, greeting and otherwise being involved and ensuring that the clinic runs smoothly.

The second part of the project will be in the fall when we will hold the actual Clinics.  These Clinics will be for the general public and should be advertised widely for a general audience.    The Expungement Clinic Subcommittee will work with you to identify and reach out to local programs that serve women to be certain that the Clinic information is provided to their participants.  Although fewer women than men have criminal records, they tend to be underrepresented at expungement clinics and we want to make a special effort to raise awareness for them.
