for Public Interest Law

The South Carolina Women Lawyers Foundation proudly announces that Gale R. DuBose is the 2016 recipient of the Martha Dicus Public Service Award.  Since graduating from the USC School of Law in 1978, Gale has advocated forcefully for the legal needs of our state’s most vulnerable children and their families.  Gale began her legal career with the Department of Social Services Child Support Division and became Chief Attorney of the Integrated Child Support Services.  As the “Jobs not Jail” Project Director and Legal Coordinator of the S. C. Center for Fathers and Families, she has developed information on expungement, child support modification, and efforts to integrate fathers back into the lives of their children.  She coordinates with the S.C. Access to Justice Commission.  The Judicial Resources she created aid non-custodial parents in filing Pro Se documents in order to obtain Family Court orders for visitation.

Gale has been an active participant in the S. C. Bar’s Public Services Division who has devoted countless hours to working with law students.  She is a true role model, living her work ethic and her compassion for the most vulnerable.   Like Martha Dicus, Gale has “Heart”!

The Dicus Award for Public Interest Law
honors Martha Browning Dicus (1949-2012).  During her long career in public interest law, primarily as a front-line legal aid lawyer and public defender, Martha touched and improved countless lives.  The Dicus Award honor must exemplify Martha’s commitment and zeal in using the law to serve the most vulnerable in our communities, by representing the poor, advancing justice and encouraging women lawyers in public interest careers.
